nestor e.V. – competence network for digital preservation
The competence network nestor focuses on the long-term preservation and availability of digital resources in Germany. The term “nestor” is a composite of “network” and “storage”. The competence network sees itself as a point of contact for issues relating to long-term digital preservation.
The nestor office is located at the German National Library. The office coordinates the planning and implementation of nestor’s activities. It is also the point of contact for queries from within Germany and abroad.

Knowledge promotes preservation
Libraries, archives and museums are increasingly facing the task of archiving digital publications and other digital resources reliably in the long term.
However, digital data is unstable. The task of storing it and making it available for a long time to come (long-term preservation) is technically possible but complex. Planning and ongoing maintenance are essential if access to digital data is to be preserved in the long term.
Individual institutions can undertake long-term preservation if they have access to
- existing knowledge,
- proven strategies and
- successfully tested tools.
nestor generates and collects such knowledge and makes it available to institutions.
More information about nestor publications is available here.
The nestor working groups
