Training day at the German National Library in Leipzig

20 October 2021 press release

On 28 October 2021, trainees and trainers of the German National Library will be staging a special information event during which they will talk about the paths to professional qualification available at the Leipzig location. Between 14:00 and 18:00, school pupils, their parents and anyone with an interest in library work can learn about training matters, ask questions and talk to current trainees.

The German National Library offers the following training courses:

  • Media and information services specialist, subject area: library
  • Computer science experts in system integration

Each training course lasts three years.

It will be possible to speak with trainees from both professions, to trainers from various fields of work at the German National Library and to the training manager herself. From 14:00, current trainees will give tours of some training areas: collection development, the issues desk and the stack. Trainees will also present the projects they are working on and explain what internships involve. The “glass PC”, which is part of the computer science course, provides anyone interested in IT with an insight into the trainees’ tasks. Transcription exercises, a quiz and information on the vocational school and the German National Library itself round off the event.

On 1 September 2021 six assistants began a three-year course at the German National Library in the field of media and information services, with emphasis on library services. Four assistants began their training in Leipzig. Their work is mainly of a practical nature and includes procuring and cataloguing, enabling access to and providing media, information and data, as well as advising and assisting library users. The next training course begins in September 2022.

The computer science training course with specialist area systems integration begins every two years. The next training course begins in September 2022. Computer science experts in system integration, create and configure systems within information and telecommunication technology. As in-house service providers, they develop systems to meet specific needs and ensure that these systems function. Part of the work involves systematically isolating and troubleshooting errors using the latest expert and diagnostic tools. They give advice on the choice and deployment of devices and resolve practical issues and system problems. They also draft system documentation and run courses.

Trainees can also get involved internally in the Staff Council, complete internships in Germany and abroad as well as initiate their own projects. With this wide range of different experiences and learned skills, they have good chances on the job market.
