From 17 March 2019, the German National Library in Leipzig will also be opening its reading room in the German Museum of Books and Writing on Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00. Opening this reading room on Sundays is another step towards improving the services provided by the German National Library and aligning them with user needs.

With these Sunday opening hours, the German National Library is responding to a steadily growing trend: users are no longer going to libraries merely to use the media, but are increasingly also using them as places for quiet, focused study, reading and writing. Visitors to the light, modern reading room have access to the digital media in the Library's holdings. There is also a reference library focusing on book and media history and general reference works.

Visitors who wish to use the reading room on Sundays must have a valid library card issued by the German National Library. Media on order cannot be made available for viewing.

Background

The German National Library collects, catalogues and archives all printed and digital material published or distributed in Germany since 1913 along with foreign publications about Germany or in the German language. This includes all sheet music and music resources published in Germany. The German National Library’s collections consist of more than 36 million media units; these can be accessed in the reading rooms in Leipzig and Frankfurt and in digital form in the World Wide Web where this is permitted by law. Various other user services are also provided.
