Vocational training day at the German National Library in Leipzig

5 November 2019 press release

On 14 November 2019, trainees and trainers of the German National Library will be staging a special information event during which they will talk about the paths to professional qualification available at the Leipzig location. Between 14:00 and 18:00, school pupils, their parents and anyone with an interest in library work can learn about training matters, ask questions and talk to current trainees. The German National Library in Leipzig offers the following training courses:

  • Media and Information Services Specialist, subject area: Library and
  • Computer Science Expert, subject area: System Integration.

Each training course lasts three years.

It will be possible to speak with trainees from both professions, to trainers from various fields of work at the German National Library and to the training manager herself. From 14:00, current trainees will give tours round the main training areas every 30 minutes: returns and issues, the information desk and the stack. Trainees will also present the projects they are working on and explain what internships involve. The “glass PC”, which is part of the computer science course, provides anyone interested in IT with an insight into the trainees’ tasks. Transcription exercises, a quiz and information on the vocational school and the German National Library itself round off the event.

On 1 September 2019 four media and information service specialists (specialising in librarianship) began a three-year apprenticeship at the German National Library (three of them in Leipzig). At the library they will mainly be carrying out practical work that is of importance for the library's routine operation. Their main tasks include acquiring, cataloguing, presenting and making available media, information and data, as well as advising and supporting library users. The next intake of apprentices will be in September 2020.

An IT specialist began his training on 1 September 2018. Computer scientists specialising in systems integration (FISI) plan, develop and configure information and telecommunications systems. As in-house service providers they develop dedicated systems and ensure their correct operation. In the event of malfunctions they systematically isolate and resolve the errors using modern expert and diagnostic systems. They advise on the selection and use of devices, and resolve application and system problems. In addition, they create system documentation and conduct training. Apprenticeships for computer scientists specialising in the field of system integration start every two years; the next intake will be in September 2020.

Trainees can also get involved internally in the Staff Council, complete internships in Germany and abroad as well as initiate their own projects. With such a wealth of experience and impressions, trainees can forge their path on the job market and have good chances of securing employment at the library.
