Apprenticeship Day at the German National Library in Leipzig

Press release: 5.11.2018

On 15 November 2018, the German National Library's Leipzig facility is staging a special information event during which trainees and trainers will be talking about the paths to professional qualification in this field. Between 14:00 and 18:00, school pupils, their parents and anyone with an interest in library work can learn about training matters, ask questions and talk to current trainees.

The German National Library in Leipzig offers the following apprenticeships:

  • Media and Information Services Specialist, subject area: library, and
  • Computer Science Expert, subject area: systems integration.

Both are three-year courses.

It will be possible to speak to trainees in either of the two specialist fields, to trainers from various German National Library areas and to the training manager herself. From 14:00 and at 30-minute intervals, current trainees will give tours round the main training areas: returns and issues, the information desk and the stack. Trainees will also present the projects they are working on and explain what hands-on training involves. The 'glass PC' which is part of the computer science course affords anyone keen on IT a glimpse of trainee tasks. Transcription exercises, a quiz and information on the vocational school and the German National Library itself round off the event.
On 1 September 2018 six assistants began a three-year course at the German National Library in the field of media and information services, with emphasis on library services. Four assistants began their training in Leipzig. Their work is mainly of a practical nature and includes procuring and indexing, enabling access to and providing media, information and data, as well as advising and assisting library users. The next training course begins in September 2019.

One computer scientist also began a course on 1 September 2018. Computer scientists whose specialism is systems integration planning, create and configure systems within information and telecommunication technology. As in-house service providers, they develop systems to meet specific needs and ensure that these systems function. Part of the work involves systematically isolating and troubleshooting errors using the latest expert and diagnostic tools. They give advice on the choice and deployment of devices and resolve practical issues and system problems. They also draft system documentation and run courses. The computer science training course with specialist area systems integration begins every two years. The next training course begins in September 2020.

A world of knowledge awaits you
