German National Library cooperating with BASE search engine

The German National Library has signed a cooperation agreement with the metadata aggregator Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE). The aim of the agreement is to support the Library in fulfilling its collection mandate for online publications.
Open Access publications are playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of information and knowledge on the Internet. Their collection is part of the collection mandate for online publications. In line with its strategic priorities, the German National Library is set to intensify its activities in the field of scientific open access publications in the coming years.
BASE is operated as a metadata aggregator by Bielefeld University Library. With its focus on open access content, BASE is one of the world's leading specialist search engines for scientific Internet resources. It currently contains reference information on over 114 million documents gleaned from more than 5,700 repositories and publishing services all over the world (as of August 2017). BASE is also an essential information base for a range of innovative access services for freely available online publications such as oa DOI or Unpaywall.
Background
For over a century now the German National Library has been collecting, documenting, archiving and making publicly available all written and sound recording publications issued in Germany, or in German, since 1913. The amendment of the Law regarding the German National Library (DNBG), introduced in 2006, expanded the collection mandate to include non-physical media publications (online publications).
