Apprenticeship Day at the German National Library in Leipzig
From 14:00 to 18:00 on 5 October 2017 school pupils, their parents and all prospective applicants will have the opportunity to find out about vocational training at the German National Library in Leipzig. Library apprentices will be providing information on their work and training. The German National Library in Leipzig offers apprenticeships in media and information services (specialising in librarianship) and in IT (specialising in systems integration).
Each apprenticeship lasts three years.
Apprentices from the two professions, trainers from various application areas in the German National Library and the Head of Training will be on hand to answer questions. Different sections in which the apprentices are deployed - including the book issue desk, the information desk and the acquisitions department - will be presented. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions and talk to the apprentices in person, and the apprentices themselves will also be presenting their project work and reporting on their internships.
On 1 September 2017 six media and information service specialists (specialising in librarianship) began a three-year apprenticeship at the German National Library (four of them in Leipzig). At the library they will mainly be carrying out practical work that is of importance for the library's routine operation. Their main tasks include acquiring, cataloguing, presenting and making available media, information and data, as well as advising and supporting library users. The next intake of apprentices will be in September 2018.
Computer scientists specialising in systems integration (FISI) plan, develop and configure information and telecommunications systems. As in-house service providers they develop dedicated systems and ensure their correct operation. In the event of malfunctions they systematically isolate and resolve the errors using modern expert and diagnostic systems.
They advise on the selection and use of devices, and resolve application and system problems. In addition, they create system documentation and conduct training. Apprenticeships for computer scientists specialising in the field of system integration start every two years; the next intake will be in September 2018.
