Subject cataloguing - Quo vadis? “Satellite conference” on 4 November 2016 in Frankfurt am Main in advance of the annual meeting of the RDA Steering Committee RSC

Press release: 27.9.2016

The national libraries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are organising a conference entitled “Subject Cataloguing - Quo vadis?” on 4 November 2016 at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main in advance of the working session of the steering committee for the international standard Resource Description and Access (RDA). The programme, abstracts of the papers and application details are now available online at www.dnb.de/rscsatellite. The conference will be held in English.

The focus of the conference will be on examining content accessibility from different perspectives. Developments in the digital world influence cataloguing rules but so, too, do requirements for the retrievability of resources from the user's point of view, cooperation among libraries themselves and between libraries and other cultural institutions. RDA forms an interface and a link between these poles.

The conference will focus on subject cataloguing, the wide-ranging aspects of which will also be discussed in terms of its overarching application in cultural heritage institutions.

Some parts of the meeting of the RDA Steering Committee from November 7 - 11 at the German National Library will be open to observers. Advance registration is required.

Background

The German National Library collects, documents, archives and makes publicly available all written, graphic and sound recording publications issued in Germany, or in German, since 1913. As part of the internationalisation of the German standards, the Office for Bibliographic Standards was appointed by the Committee for Library Standards to play an active role in developing the new international “Resource Description and Access (RDA)” standard.

The RDA is based on the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), the Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD) and the Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP). In future, the Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data (FRSAD) of the IFLA metadata communities will also be included in the RDA creation process.

The German National Library provides a comprehensive range of digital services: the Deutsche Nationalbibliografie, New Releases, Data Service, Data Shop, SRU Interface, OAI Interface, Linked Data Service, URN Service and Catalogue Enrichment.
