Facilitating research - Linking the scientific community

The German National Library provides a wide range of services for scientists and researchers and is constantly forging and consolidating links with universities and research institutions.

We are part of an innovative knowledge community and cooperate with national and international partners to conduct research into our collections and data. We offer our collections and data as important research resources. We also offer seminars, workshops and fellowship programmes to advance the education of up-and-coming researchers.

We are represented at relevant symposiums, and our events and lectures help improve the visibility of our collections and services. From DNBLab to citizen science projects and digital humanities calls, our innovative formats move with the times to facilitate inclusive access to our unique collections.

We foster learning, research, creativity and inspiration. Support us in this effort!

Digitisation strategy

A fully digitised collection offers the best conditions for research. Our digitisation strategy is part of our overall strategy. Our long-term goal is to make all our analogue holdings available in digital format. At present, we are digitising works that can no longer be made available in the original because of their condition and, as part of the systematic digitisation process, monographs acquired in the years from 1913 and 1945.

Subject cataloguing with the help of AI

The German National Library consistently pursues a path of innovation and quality enhancement in the acquisition and cataloguing processes it uses for all kinds of material. With this in mind, we are establishing additional machine-based processes to facilitate our acquisition, collection development and cataloguing activities; these are integrated into our intellectual processes. At the same time, we are developing a quality concept for our cataloguing data which is based on collaborative machine-based cataloguing processes and ensures that our data are reliable, transparent and trustworthy.

Digital Humanities fellowships

Digital humanities (DH) combine digital technologies with humanities research. Researchers study cultural artefacts and historical documents using methods such as text analysis, visualisation and machine-based learning. DH encourages interdisciplinary cooperation – just like the German National Library. We award digital humanities fellowships (DH fellowships) which enable young scientists to research our open access data and collections using text and data mining methods.
