Promoting education - Sharing knowledge
Photo: Klaus D. Sonntag
As the memory of the nation, the German National Library preserves Germany's cultural heritage and offers educational and knowledge-sharing services to make it accessible to all. We use an extensive range of formats to create spaces in which history can be brought to life and knowledge shared, thus strengthening the core values of our democracy.
From educational formats featuring digital interviews with contemporary witnesses to podcasts by and with comic artists – we forge innovative paths at the interface between science, education and knowledge transfer. The "Hands-On Museum" and "Spurensuche online" offer a wide range of educational activities that tie in with school curricula. With our programmes on important social topics, we put great emphasis on direct contact and dialogue with pupils and students.
We see ourselves as a reliable source of knowledge and offer stimulating, hands-on access to this resource in order to promote freedom of information and opinion.
We are a place of learning and social dialogue. Help us shape an open, informed society!

City of Leipzig's "book children"

The German Museum of Books and Writing and Buchkinder e.V. use digital means to get their message across: as part of an initiative titled "The Future of Book Culture", we organise monthly "Digital City Light Posters" using futuristic book designs to light up urban spaces in Leipzig. In addition, readings are given at book-related locations in Leipzig all year round.
Interactive experience of the history of exile

The revised permanent exhibition "Exile. Experience and Testimony" and the temporary exhibition "Just Ask!" held by the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 communicate history interactively using a wide array of formats. Visitors can deepen their understanding of exile, persecution and ostracism during the Nazi era and keep memories of the victims alive.
2025 Hackathon

After a successful hackathon in 2024, plans for the 2025 hackathon are now entering the home straight. A concept has been developed for the theme "Democracy affects you". In the next step, we will be contacting schools in Leipzig with the intention of working with them to integrate the hackathon into lessons. We are taking democracy to the classroom.
