Goethe Medal and honorary membership of the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung e.V. awarded to Professor John M. Spalek

Prof. Dr. John M. Spalek has been a leading figure in the field of research into German-speaking exile in the USA for nearly forty years. He has been closely associated with the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 at the German National Library since the early 1970s. To date, Spalek has contributed 89 estates and partial estates from academics, publicists, authors and artists exiled in the USA to the German Exile Archive 1933–1945.

These include the estates of sociologists Joseph and Alice Maier, politologist Sigmund Neumann, authors Soma Morgenstern and Ivan Heilbut, classical scholar Ernst Moritz Manasse, Hittite scholar Hans Gustav Güterbock, and the Aufbau archive, New York. On 28 August 2010, John M. Spalek will be awarded the Goethe Medal of the Goethe Institute. The President of the Goethe Institute, Prof. Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, will be presenting him with the official Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Residenzschloss (city palace) in Weimar.
On 6 September 2010, John M. Spalek will receive another honour. Dr. Ursula Langkau-Alex, chair of the Gesellschaft für Exilforschung e.V. (Society for Exile Research), will be granting him honorary membership of the society at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main.
