The Exhibition

Born in Dresden in 1903, Fred Stein, who studied law, was dismissed from the judiciary on "political and race-related grounds" after the National Socialists came to power in 1933 and fled with his wife Lilo to Paris, where he gained considerable renown as a press and portrait photographer. In 1941, Fred Stein was forced to emigrate to New York. However, he was able to continue his career as a photographer in the USA. Fred Stein is now seen as a pioneer of the 35 mm camera. His street photography captures everyday life at the places he frequented in exile. His many portraits made him a chronicler of German-language exile.

The exhibition sheds light on Fred Stein's life and work in exile using selected photographs from his diverse portfolio. It was created in close collaboration with the Fred Stein Archive in Standfordville, NY, where Peter Stein now preserves his father's memory and estate
