Project description

Using Judaica publications as a prototype, this research project addresses the key question of how the German National Library's data can be catalogued and analysed in greater depth with the help of external data sources.

Specialised libraries such as the library of the Center for Research on Antisemitism at the Technical University of Berlin usually catalogue their collections in greater detail and with closer attention to subject-specific considerations than general libraries.

As an object of research, Judaica constitute a historically evolved database in which the assignment of metadata is linked with factors such as changing terminology. Although the semantics are the same, the terms used in metadata and full texts to describe the concept of "anti-Semitism", for example, vary from one period of time to another. The subject heading "anti-Semitism" will therefore be used to catalogue the corresponding data records in the DNB's catalogue with the help of external data sources.

The core of the project is an exploratory "deep drilling" into metadata enrichment with the aim of researching the added value of linked data records from specialised library catalogues for general libraries. Besides gaining insights into content, methodological recommendations will be derived for application to deeper automated analytical processes.

The project was proposed by Janna Kienbaum.
