Project description

This research project will examine the entire publication period (1913-2023) encompassed by the German National Library's collected data while taking previously defined lexical restrictions into account, the aim being to draw conclusions as to when discourse on the environment and the Anthropocene epoch began at publication level in Germany. Particular attention will be paid to the bibliographic metadata of publications on the topic of environmental awareness. The project's objectives are the performance of a quantitative literary study and the empirical identification of environmental discourse at a socio-historical level.

The historical distribution of quantitative data subsets in the DNB's catalogue will also yield empirical information on publications as a form of cultural ecology. During the course of a descriptive analysis, both absolute and relative metrics will be generated to describe the data so that statements regarding the lexical field can be placed in relation to the publication as a whole. The project will conclude with a descriptive statistical analysis as part of a final evaluation.

The project was proposed and realised by Can-Elliot Sachs.
