3R for libraries in the German-speaking countries (3R-DACH-Bib)
Project description
After being revised as part of the 3R project, the RDA Toolkit finally went online in December 2020. This means that the RDA cataloguing standard now has a new technical platform, a different documentation structure and modified content-related concepts. This will have far-reaching effects on practices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH AWR (user guidelines) and standard element set).
The Committee for Library Standards has therefore asked the cataloguing expert group to compile a joint cataloguing handbook for libraries in the German-speaking countries. This will contain framework documentation for the most important applications used in cataloguing practice. The goal is to keep the changes that have to be made to cataloguing practice and environments to the absolute minimum. The current cataloguing practice is being evaluated with an eye to practical implementation.
The documentation characteristics and framework conditions are:
- format-neutral description
- Integration of existing DACH application rules and explanations
- Link to future RDA Toolkit as the basis for compliant cataloguing
Another key focus will be the compilation of an application profile for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
A user training concept will also be developed on the basis of the cataloguing handbook.
Results
All the project targets have been achieved. The new RDA DACH standard can now be found at https://sta.dnb.de/doc together with the STA platform, a framework and coordination hub which integrates all standards. A training concept for the switch to RDA DACH was developed in 2023 and successfully realised with effect from the autumn of 2023.
