Project description

Coding da Vinci is the first German open cultural data hackathon. This format was initiated by the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany, the Berlin Research and Competence Centre for Digitalisation (digiS) and Wikimedia Germany. Since 2014, it has been linking technically-oriented, culture-loving communities with German cultural institutions for the purpose of developing the creative potential in our digital cultural heritage.

Coding da Vinci has now grown beyond the scope of individual events and has the potential – with purposeful development and secure prospects spanning several years – to become a significant driving force behind the digital transformation of the cultural heritage sector.

Coding da Vinci is now supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, which will be providing funding for the next four years. An office – housed in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library – DDB) at the German National Library in Frankfurt am Main – has been set up in April 2019 to assume responsibility for the central coordination of Coding da Vinci.

The project addresses the following core goals:

  • Regionalisation: The regional events facilitated since 2016 are to be continued.
  • Scale: Two Coding da Vinci events are to be held each year between 2019 and 2022. Here the office will act in a supportive and advisory capacity.
  • Competence development: Cultural institutions will be assisted with the acquisition of the competences required for digital transformation towards a freely accessible, freely usable cultural heritage.
  • Data usability: The website is to be expanded and the data and results of all Coding da Vinci hackathons are to be made available on a long-term basis.
  • Further strategic development: A strategy for the future development of Coding da Vinci is to be developed in cooperation with the founding partners, selected regional partners and the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
