Project description

The objective of the “ISSN Integration” project was to integrate the separate data and object workflows of the National ISSN Centre (housed within the German National Library) into the workflows of the "Collection, Acquisition and Descriptive Cataloguing" department using data from the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB).

The project was divided into two parts.

The objectives of Phase 1, which was completed in November 2014, were to replace the antiquated ISSN cataloguing system and, temporarily until the end of the project, to document resources in a separate ISSN set of holdings which had been assigned an ISSN in the cataloguing system of the German National Library. This meant that data from the ZDB could now be directly re-used for ISSN records for the first time. The exporting of data to the ISSN Register hosted centrally by the International ISSN Centre (IC) in Paris via an OAI interface was also automated.

Phase 2 includes the further optimisation of the object and data workflows in collaboration with the International ISSN Centre (IC) and the ZDB. In concrete terms this means:

  • Further development of the ZDB data format in order to notify relevant information from the data holdings of the ZDB via an ISSN assignment to the IC in the future
  • Integration of the National ISSN Centre routines into the workflows of the "Collection, Acquisition and Descriptive Cataloguing" department (object workflow optimisation).

Since the project was completed on 1 December 2016, the ISSN assignment, the cataloguing of ongoing serial publications and the export of data to the ISSN Register have been conducted in the ZDB using the bibliographic data available there. Catalogue content is simultaneously created as part of the pre-assignment of an ISSN (for publications not yet released) which can then be re-used by the participants within the ZDB.

During cataloguing of ongoing resources for the Nationalbibliografie, most of the resources collected under the legal deposit regulation are automatically assigned an ISSN. These can be used for searches in the catalogue of the German National Library.
