IN2N – Cross-institutional integration of authority data

Project description

The objective of IN2N was to develop and test a cooperation model for cross-domain maintenance of the Integrated Authority File (GND).

The GND contains authority records for persons, corporate bodies, conferences and events, places or geographic names, topics, and works and provides a clear reference system for the cataloguing of bibliographic data. GND data records are managed cooperatively by the German National Library, all library networks in the German-speaking countries, the German Union Catalogue of Serials (ZDB) and numerous other institutions. The purpose of IN2N is to simplify collaboration with partners outside the realm of libraries. The mirroring of GND data and the resulting correspondence of the data models is to be replaced by innovative and modern solutions.

An example here was the name authority file of the Deutsches Filminstitut (DIF) which can be accessed in filmportal.de. It is now combined with the corresponding personal name records of the GND and managed cooperatively. The processes, tools and services are transferable to other scenarios and further partners, thereby providing a common basis for the cross-domain application of the GND authority data.

The project results aim to show scientific, publishing, social web, cultural and library-related bodies how cooperative authority data management of distributed data can be applied via the Web in practice.
