Changed opening hours

From 24 December 2024 to 1 January 2025: The German National Library will be closed at both locations. Media ordered during the closure period will be made available in the course of 2 January 2025.

The permanent exhibition and the temporary exhibitions at the German Museum of Books and Writing in Leipzig will be open from 27 to 29 December from 10:00 am to 18:00.

Overview

The German National Library enables anyone locally using a full copy of the Integrated Authority File (GND) to keep these data records up to date by way of regular metadata updates via the OAI interface or the weekly change service. Through coded information in the authority data records the following actions can be traced:

  • new entries
  • corrections
  • redirects
  • deletions
  • divisions

New entries and corrections

Newly entered GND data records as well as corrections to existing data records are marked in the respective data record (see overview of change codes for formats MARC 21 and RDF/XML).

Redirects and deletions

What is a redirect or a deletion?

The action "redirect" is used when a GND data record is found to be duplicate to another data record and both data records are merged. The redirect effects that all bibliographic data records formerly linked to the loser data record are linked to the winner data record.

The action "deletion" happens in few exceptional cases e. g. if a redirect is not possible due to technical reasons.

Redirects and deletions are initially provided as notifications. They can be identified in the export format (see overview of change codes for formats MARC 21 and RDF/XML).

After the notification the data records are shortened so that they only transport the most essential information: identifier and redirect target or deletion notification with indication of the permanent link.

In the following week, the shortened data records appear as “real” redirects or deletions in the GND change service.
They are delivered via the OAI interface in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.

The shortened data records are kept in the database permanently, so that they can be retrieved through OAI and SRU for longer periods. They are also available as semi-annually (MARC 21, MARC21-xml) or monthly (JSON-LD) data dumps.

Splits

What is a split?

The action "split" is used in order to inform GND participants that an existing GND data record is linked to bibliographic records that need to be attributed to different entities. Such GND data records are tagged in order to indicate the already existing or newly entered data records.

A split can be identified in the export format by the string „Aufspaltung-ohne-Umlenkung“ (split without redirect) or „Aufspaltung-mit-Umlenkung“ (split with redirect) (see overview of change codes).

The split for geographic entities can be identified in the export format by the string „Aufspaltung-mit-Teilumlenkung“ (split with partial redirect). In this case, bibliographic records linked to the GND data record in the subject cataloguing segment are redirected.

Information about a split remains in the data record for one week at maximum. It is deleted from the data record after being delivered by the GND change service. Via the OAI interface the corrected data records are delivered without the information on the split in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.

Overview of change codes: MARC 21

Note: In this representation the character _ (underscore) stands for the space character (hexadecimal 20) in coded fields and other specific cases in which the presence of a space character can be ambiguous.
