Exhibitions are designed to act as showcases for the German National Library.
The German Museum of Books and Writing, the German Exile Archive 1933–1945 and the German Music Archive all display their unique collections in permanent exhibitions. Visitors also receive regular invitations to temporary exhibitions and collaborative exhibition projects. We offer a varied programme of exhibitions, both online and on our premises in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main.

Virtual exhibition

Our exhibitions on site are complemented by virtual exhibitions that can be accessed anywhere in the world at any time. The multimedia online exhibitions consist of a wide variety of images, videos, sound recordings and digitalised original documents.

Guided tours

We hold regular guided tours of our sites and exhibitions. These dates are listed in our events calendar. We also offer individual guided group tours in some areas. Clubs, school classes or company outings are all welcome – simply book your desired date and time.

Education and Instruction

Are you curious about the history of books and writing, and would you like to explore individual aspects of media history? How about getting creative with letters and paper?

If this appeals to you, the “Hands-On Museum” is perfect for you: the German Museum of Books and Writing in Leipzig offers an extensive programme of events for all ages, for schools, studies and for your free time.

The German Exile Archive’s educational and teaching service “Discover and Learn” allows you to experience historical aspects of exile from letters, photographs, passports, suitcases, manuscripts and many other objects. We invite school classes, students and other interested groups of all ages to explore the exhibitions virtually or in person.

Europe and Us

In the second half of 2020, Germany took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. As the memory of the nation, the German National Library was keen to emphasise the importance of Europe for our country, both in our past and for our future. This is why we accompanied Germany’s presidency of the Council of the EU with a wide range of events.
