Translating Europe – translation in times of digital revolution

Today, more material is being translated than ever before – but in an ever-decreasing number of languages. Globalisation, digitisation and sociocultural influences are changing social and political structures. What types of translation are emerging from digitisation? What effects are political and social change having on language and language awareness? This and other questions were discussed with a wide interdisciplinary public.

Shaping Access 2020

“Driving Innovation” was in 2020 the central theme of the conference “Shaping Access!”.
The conference addressed through four thematic categories the new challenges faced in preserving and teaching about cultural heritage: the public domain during the pandemic, innovation during the pandemic, data protection during the pandemic and copyright during the pandemic.

Rethinking Culture and Science - Opportunities, Risks and Developments of the Digital Revolution in Europe

Advances in technology, digitisation, new expectations, and demands from society and the political arena are forcing Europe’s cultural and scientific institutions to deal with changing tasks, challenges and processes. The first session of the virtual conference “Rethinking Culture and Science – Opportunities, Risks and Developments of the Digital Revolution in Europe” highlighted the opportunities and risks of digitalisation and the role that copyright plays in this process. The second session was devoted to studies of noteworthy cases.

Current Standing and Perspectives of Digital Humanities

10 March 2020

Digital humanities are one of the more recently established areas of academic research. Since the year 2000, numerous associations, local networks and working groups have been created in both library institutions and the field of traditional humanities with the objective of focusing on this area in depth. As a memory institution and “central archive”, the German National Library is monitoring this development closely. Moreover, its collections constitute a significant research base for this still comparatively new discipline.
