During the 1960s, folk was strongly politicised. The currents of the folk revival, which mainly merged in New York, also found various forms of expression here. The young Bob Dylan became a global folk icon and the uncrowned king of the New York scene, while Dave van Ronk made a name for himself as the linchpin of the folk scene in the New York neighbourhood of Greenwich Village. The political nuances of the 1960s are vividly expressed in the work of both these representatives of the American folk world. Richard Limbert, music archivist at the Lippmann+Rau Music Archive in Eisenach, explains the similarities and differences between Bob Dylan and Dave van Ronk in a virtual lecture.

"Bob Dylan and Dave van Ronk are two sides of the same coin. The folk movement could not have survived the 1960s without political positioning."
(Richard Limbert)
