Exhibition showcasing the architectural design competition for the German National Library's fifth extension in Leipzig
18 September to 1 October 2024
In 2024, an international architectural competition was launched for the fifth extension building in the history of the German National Library. The exhibition displays all the works submitted and presents the winning entries.
The plans and models give fascinating insights into the architectural concepts developed for the extension building, which will be devoted solely to stacks.
The plans for the German National Library's fifth extension building in Leipzig must meet high quality standards. On the one hand, a highly functional, climate-stable repository building with a high degree of space and energy efficiency is required for the long-term archiving and preservation of the media collections. On the other, the new building must blend in as well as possible with the listed historic library ensemble on Deutscher Platz and its surroundings.
Twenty architectural offices were selected to submit their plans and models during a preliminary competition. Sixteen offices have submitted their work. The submissions were evaluated by a jury in Leipzig on 10 September 2024. Three prizes and two commendations were awarded.
