Our Birthday party in Leipzig on 3 October

On 3 October, the German National Library had two reasons to celebrate: the 111th birthday of one of Germany's biggest libraries, and the traditional "Mouse Open Day". More than 500 visitors took us up on our invitation to look behind the scenes – with the Mouse and an analogue and digital scavenger hunt.
Fans of all ages of the cult TV show "Die Sendung mit der Maus" ("The Show with the Mouse") discovered rare and fascinating items in the library and its collections, all under the heading of "precious treasures". After the guided tours, the children and their parents, friends and relatives had the opportunity to take part in creative activities in the museum gallery or solve a quiz during the scavenger hunt held to mark the German National Library's 111th birthday.
The festivities marked the 111th anniversary of the signing of the contract establishing the "Deutsche Bücherei” on 3 October 1912. 111 years ago, the Kingdom of Saxony, the City of Leipzig and the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhändler zu Leipzig (German Book Traders’ Association of Leipzig) signed a contract for the foundation of the "Deutsche Bücherei". Its task: to collect, catalogue and make available for use all German and foreign-language literature published in Germany and all German-language literature published abroad from 1 January 1913 onwards. This collection mandate is still valid today.
