The media and information specialists who focus on library work are responsible for acquiring and cataloguing our media and for advising and assisting users who wish to search and use our printed and electronic holdings.The German National Library accepts six trainees every year. We offer four places at our Leipzig site and two in Frankfurt am Main.

This cooperative course commences on 1 September every year and lasts three years. The vocational schools attended by the trainees are the Gutenbergschule in Leipzig and the Stauffenbergschule in Frankfurt am Main.

Trainees are paid in accordance with the collective wage agreement for trainees in public service.

  • Trainings location: Leipzig or Frankfurt am Main
  • Duration of traineeship: 3 years
  • Training commences: 1 September each year
  • Application deadline: 15 November of the previous year

Admission requirements

The requirements for admission are an intermediate school-leaving certificate, good school performance, a sound knowledge of German and English, a good general education, team skills, a marked interest in working with computer-based systems, marked willingness to learn, reliability, carefulness and an enjoyment of working with people.
