The commitment of more than 600 staff has helped us become the cultural memory of Germany.
Our task is nothing less than to collect our national cultural heritage and preserve it for future generations: more than 46.3 million texts, images and sound recordings, over 12.3 million of which are online publications. We catalogue this immense, ever-growing treasury of knowledge and make it ready for use – not only at our locations in Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main, but also increasingly online. Germany’s central archival library is consequently a vital platform for research and dialogue from which innovation can grow.
We bring many different worlds of work and knowledge together. But regardless of the departments we work in or the jobs we do, what unites us is the knowledge that we are contributing to something special. Together we are shaping our cultural heritage and connecting with our digital future.

Our cultural heritage is a valuable repository of printed works, digital collections and music. We preserve, document and catalogue it for purposes of research, knowledge and education. And to ensure it remains accessible for generations to come. This is what makes our cultural heritage a source of new knowledge.
As Germany’s largest archival library and national bibliographic centre, we offer librarians, media and information service specialists, humanities scholars and information scientists a wide variety of opportunities to develop professionally, take part in exciting projects and help shape the memory of the nation. As a federal government authority, we also offer sound prospects and attractive working conditions.

As an increasingly digitised cultural memory, our aim is to help create a borderless, web-based knowledge network. This is why we are performing ground-breaking work in many areas, including digital long-term archiving and the use of artificial intelligence in subject cataloguing. We archive web content and use digital resources to back up our analogue holdings and make them accessible online.
IT experts fill our mission DNB 4.0 with life. Besides entrusting them with challenging tasks, we also offer them enough scope to develop and test solutions without coming under pressure. This means that everyone can benefit from their work. After all, anyone who gives cultural heritage a digital future is actively contributing to the knowledge and civil society of tomorrow.

Our legal mandate is as extensive as it is unique. This is why the German National Library needs efficient administration. Our mandate encompasses a wide range of tasks – from legal counselling through finance, organisation, personnel recruitment, service and development, events, property management, acquisitions and contracting to technical facility management services. For each of these tasks, we are looking for competent experts who want their work to make a meaningful contribution and help shape the future of our cultural heritage.

The German National Library is unique among libraries. It is performing a meaningful mission – for society, for future generations, for everyone. This is what unites us at the German National Library and shapes our working environment. Incidentally, this is far more diverse and digital than many people assume.
As fully fledged members of the team, our trainees receive challenging tasks to do, not just for practice, but to let them make valuable contributions. They often become involved in projects which allow them to pursue their own interests. Sometimes they get to do truly pioneering work.

Gaining experience, trying out what you have learned, experiencing the real world of work – our internships for trainee legal professionals and people just starting out on their careers offer interesting opportunities to do this, as does the government’s Federal voluntary service in the cultural sector.

The German National Library is Germany’s central archival library. Our collections encompass more than 49,7 million books, newspapers, journals, sound recordings and scores, maps, and archival materials in both physical and digital formats. Our digital holdings include e-books, audio books, websites and digitised works. These holdings grow by about six kilometres of shelving and around 133 terabytes of storage space every year.
