The German Museum of Books and Writing is celebrating its 140th birthday. The Deutsche Buchgewerbemuseum (German Book Trade Museum) was founded on 29 October 1884 by leading cultural figures and entrepreneurs active in Leipzig's book industry. On adding the Heinrich Klemm collection to its holdings, the museum became the custodian of one of the most important collections of incunabula. The threat of closure caused by inflation in the 1920s was averted thanks to a generous artist’s donation from Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka and Käthe Kollwitz. The museum was integrated into the Deutsche Bücherei in 1950.
